What is a Root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment (RCT) is a procedure performed to save an infected tooth or badly decayed tooth which cannot be treated by a simple filling procedure. Root canal treatment is the only alternative to save such badly damaged tooth from being removed. RCT is an endodontic procedure which is designed to eliminate bacteria from the infected root canals of the tooth and seal the tooth with filling material, thus preventing the re infection of the tooth.

What happens during root canal treatment?

After thorough examination and investigation of your tooth, your dentist may recommend you to undergo root canal therapy to save the tooth. Root canal treatment is carried out under local anesthesia. Once the tooth is numb after injecting local anesthesia, the dentist places a rubber dam to isolate the tooth from the surroundings to prevent contamination.

The dentist then makes a small opening in the crown of the tooth called access opening and removes the entire infected tissue and disinfects the root canals. After the root canals are thoroughly cleaned and shaped, a biocompatible material is filled and the opening is restored with dental cement.

Root canal treated tooth may not be as strong as your natural healthy tooth especially when most of the tooth structure is damaged. In such cases, your dentist may advise you to go for a crown placement for such tooth for the additional strength.
